Report No. 135 6.11. International developments.- In connection with women in custody for reasons of mental ill health, it will be of interest to note some of the international1 developments. The position has been thus stated:- "In 1975, in Singapore, the international Council of Nurses (CN) adopted a resolution on the "Role of the Nurse in the Care of Detainees and Prisoners". In the same year, the World Medical Association (WMA) adopted its famous Tokyo Declaration on "Guidelines for Medical Doctors concerning Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in Relation to Detention and Imprisonment. The organisation of other health professions such as, psychiatrists, psychologists, etc., also formulated their own codes of ethics in this field at the same time. As a consequence, on December 18, 1982, the United Nations General Assembly adopted, 'Principles of Medical Ethics Relevant to the Role of Health Personnel, Particularly Physicians, in the Protection of Prisoners and Detainees Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment' (for full text of these Codes, see Radical Journal of Health, issue on Human Rights and Health, September-December 1988)." 1.
