Note: Although the figures for Chandigarh and Punjab & Haryana relate to the same High Court, they are presented separately in the "Court News" publication and the same is reflected here. Therefore, at present, we find that 34,32,493 civil cases are pending across the 24 High Courts in India. 2.4.2 The Law Commission also sought information from the five High Courts with original jurisdiction with respect to the pendency of civil suits between 2003 and 2013. Extending the analysis of annual filing and disposal for the last ten years provided by the above High Courts, Table 2 shows that except for the Calcutta and Bombay High Court, all the other High Courts (namely, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and the Madras High Court) have witnessed a consistent increase in the pendency of civil suits. However, the reduction in pendency in the Bombay High Court is a consequence of the increase in its pecuniary jurisdiction from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. One Crore, with the result that many suits were transferred to the City Civil Courts. The pendency as per figures obtained from the High Courts with respect to civil suits is as follows:    |
